The coolant temperature sensor is designed to respond to changes in engine coolant temperature, and is crucial in the control of temperature based functions performed by the ECU (eg spark and fuel timing, instrumentation, etc).

A faulty coolant temperature sensor can result in poor engine performance including difficult starting, poor fuel economy, possible overheating and potential engine damage.
